Types of Acne

Characterised by the presence of comedones, which are clogged pores.

Includes:

  • Blackheads: Open comedones, appear as small dark dots on the skin.
  • Whiteheads: Closed comedones, appear as small white bumps under the skin.
  • Generally less severe, but can still be bothersome.

Involves inflammation and redness.

Includes:

  • Papules: Small, red, and inflamed bumps.
  • Pustules: Papules with a white or yellow center containing pus.

Often triggered by hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy.

  • Commonly appears on the jawline, chin, and lower face.
  • Can be persistent and may require specific treatment approaches.

The most severe form of acne.

  • Characterised by deep, painful, and pus-filled cysts that can cause scarring.
  • Often requires medical treatment from a dermatologist.

These types of acne can sometimes overlap. For example, someone might have both comedonal and inflammatory acne.
