When Dry Skin Goes Deeper Than the Surface...

A common reason behind dryness is a weak skin protective barrier. How? When it can no longer prevent moisture loss. But the truth is, there are many more reasons behind dry skin types!

Some reasons behind dry skin include:

  • The Environment: Certain weather conditions can make your skin more prone to dryness. This ranges from the cold, to not enough humidity. Keep in mind that our harsh Aussie sun can especially strip skin of its moisture.
  • Skin Aging: When we're young, we produce oils that keep our skin smooth. However the aging process slows down this oil production overtime.
  • Medical Conditions: If you've been diagnosed with a skin condition, you're more likely to experience dryness. This includes but isn't limited to eczema, psoriasis, thyroid and kidney disease.
  • Poor Skin Routine: As a rule of thumb, avoid long hot showers that strip your skin of its oils. Also, look for skincare free of soaps, sulphates and harsh exfoliants.

FAQS

You may be wondering, "Aren't dry and dehydrated skin the same thing?" However, dry skin lacks oils, making it rough and flaky. On the other hand, dehydrated skin lacks water, causing tightness and dullness. Dry skin needs oil, while dehydrated skin needs water.

The right skincare prep is an essential step to flawless makeup. When left untreated, dry skin can cause products to have a patchy, caky, or even flakey finish.

Consider factors such as your level of skin sensitivity, medical history, severity of skin dryness and your medication use. Depending on these, certain ingredients can cause irritation. If you're unsure, consult with your health practitioner.

It's key to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water! Keep alcohol consumption at a minimum as this is dehydrating. Alongside this, a diet rich in whole foods like fruit provides key vitamins that help enhance skin moisture.
